5 Top Tips for Designing a New Kitchen

One of the best ways to increase your equity is to have a fabulous, custom made kitchen in your home. Just image having the kitchen of your dreams with all the space and appliances you have always wanted.

The kitchen is the heart of our home and gives us a sense of comfort, belonging and of family. So if you have made the decision to redesign your kitchen, here are 5 top tips to help you start your project off on the right foot:

Know your style

You might already have a clear idea of the style you want, but if you are looking for inspiration, then check out Pinterest. This social media platform is a great resource for finding tonnes of images and you will easily find a swag of different kitchen styles pinned to people’s boards.

If you want to stay on top of trends – then this year’s designs have moved from the minimalist designs of 2013 to a more organic feel, mixing up different materials and textures such as timber, stone and laminates.  Clean lines are also still on-trend, as are simple, sleek designs and whites, off whites and grey colour schemes.

Budget

Right at the start decide whether you have the budget for a simple cosmetic makeover, a full renovation of your entire kitchen or a structural renovation where you knock down walls and completely redesign the space.

If you are heading for a complete structural renovation, you may need to move out for a week or so while the main demolition work is being done. So include these costs in your budget – maybe even go for a well-deserved holiday?

Pick your appliances

Make a list of all the appliances you want in your kitchen and in particular their sizes. This is because you have to store all of these appliances somewhere in your kitchen, so you need to start thinking about storage solutions.

You need shelves, drawers or cupboards that are deep enough and have sufficient headroom to accommodate all your appliances. Don’t forget about a space for the dishwasher and for a large refrigerator.

Power points

Think about how you will use your appliances in your new kitchen and make sure you have enough power points in the right places. There is nothing worse than having electrical cords running across your bench tops.

A really functional design trend is to have power points built flush into the bench top, making sure that they can be safely covered when not in use.

Indulge

If you are redesigning your kitchen, why not indulge yourself? Think about having one of those fabulous pot filler taps attached to your sink which makes filling pots so much easier.

How about a built in coffee machine, refrigerator or dishwasher? How about a beverage centre, wine fridge or a warming drawer? Have you always wanted a fabulous standalone oven? Well now is the time to indulge yourself and add in those little extras that transform an everyday kitchen into a dream come true kitchen.
